the majority of spells that use material items in they’re casting involve crafting a physical object that’s spiritually active to do the magic for you. different traditions use various kinds of symbolism to create an object (or substance) that represents the spells intention, then ritually “empower” the object to make it magically active. this object is then worn, displayed, destroyed or otherwise put where the caster wishes the magic to go.
you can make a lever to help you move a rock, you can make a hammer to help drive in a nail, you can ware a coat to help keep you warm, and you can make a spell-form to help you heal/find love/stay safe/be healthy/whatever.
i like the term “spell forms” for this kind of magic, because the ritual involves creating a physical form for the spell.
